Our Roaming Hens

Our hens got big enough to move to pasture a few weeks ago. (Read here to see what they looked like when they came in.)

Hubby worked really hard at getting a pen built and it was a big one!

The hens loved it!

They are so happy to be out and on grass.  They scratch and feed on every bug that they can find!

We are putting them in this movable pen until they are big enough to not be easy prey for hawks.  (Neighbors dogs we didn't think we had to worry about!)

They have been thriving...

It won't be long before we are collecting eggs!

  1. What a great idea. We have 45 free range hens which roam all over the farm and into the fields but come harvest we have to put them inside for 4 weeks to stop them raking on the seed. I feel so sorry for them and would love to have some kind of enclosure like this.

  2. So, do you both move it or are there hidden wheels, somewhere? I'm not sure I'd ever let them roam free, if moving the pen isn't too difficult. That should thwart the dogs, coyotes, and chicken hawks! Tell hubby it's beautiful.
